First-Year Commuter Definition
A first-year commuter is a new, first-time college student to the University of Tennessee in their first academic year. First-year commuters are students whose primary residence is that of their parent(s) or legal guardian(s), located within 50 miles of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus.

Living on campus significantly impacts your experience as a student, and we are committed to the programs and services that enhance student success. To ensure the quality of your first-year experience, UT requires all first-year students to live on campus. Learn more about University Housing here.
First-Year Commuter Experience
To ensure the quality of the first-year experience, Commuter Student Engagement provides programs and services to support first-year commuters.
If you plan to live off-campus during your first year, please ensure that you complete the University Housing Residency Requirement Exemption form and submit all supporting documentation.
